Let's start with a problem

Here's a problem. A customer's website is down. All the quick checks have shown the server as unresponsive. After rebooting, none of the disks are recognized. What is the next step?

There are many ways to approach this problem. At Irides, we try to address both the business aspect of the problem as well as the technical. The technical problem might be that the disk controller has failed. The business problem is that the customer is losing sales on their e-commerce site. The customer wants the business problem fixed immediately.

At Irides, we want engineers who understand how to address the business problem. If the repair can be completed promptly, that may be the right way to go. But if the site is going to be down for an extended period, a temporary solution (such as moving the IP address to another server or updating the DNS to point to a temporary site) might be better while the site is being restored. And while all of this is going on, it is essential to keep the customer informed.
